A postpartum sitz bath is a shallow, warm soak designed to soothe, clean, and promote healing of the perineal area, particularly after vaginal birth, tears, episiotomies, or hemorrhoids

. The most effective method involves  using a dedicated, cleaned basin on the toilet or filling a bathtub with 3–4 inches of water. 

 

Basic Herbal Postpartum Sitz Bath Ingredients (Herbal baths are highly recommended to speed up healing). 

 

Basic Herbal Blend Includes 

  • Calendula: Promotes skin repair.
  • Lavender: Antibacterial and soothing.
  • Comfrey Leaf: Reduces inflammation.
  • Lavender: Soothing and relaxing 
  • Camomile 
  • Epson Salts
  • Baking Soda
  • Pink Himalayan Salt 
  • Tea bag

  • Instructions:
  • Steep: Place 1 tea bag or contents/mixture into a large pot, cover with 1 quart of boiling water, and steep for a minimum of 30 minutes up to 4 hours (overnight is ideal).

    Strain: Strain the herbs by removing the tea bag, retaining the liquid.

    Use: Add this "tea" to your warm sitz bath water or bathtub.

    Soak: Soak for approximately 20 minutes, 3-4 times daily. 

  • Pat Dry: Always gently pat the area dry with a clean towel afterward.
  • Temperature: Use warm water, not hot, to avoid burning.
  • Safety: Ensure the tub or basin is thoroughly cleaned before use.
